Organic farming movements in Europe are widely recognised as a positive force by market actors and civil society, as well as relevant actors in policy networks. At the same time, the organic movement is in a process of self-reflection, reconsidering its value basis. Taking account of both a policy network and a social movement perspective, this article seeks to understand political action of the organic sector. Making use of a cross-country comparison of European organic farming policy networks, it conceptualises the consequences of such action with regard to political influence and the identity of the organic farming movement. While different strategies are employed to influence politics, a space needs to be opened up within the movements for continuous... |

Atopandrium loripenne Graham, 1952, and Trisynaldis conflucta Fischer, 1958, are synonymized with Aphaereta debilitata Morley, 1933. Aphaereta palea (Papp, 1990), Hypodoryctes spathiiformis (Ratzeburg, 1848), and Cenocoelius aartseni (van Achterberg, 1994) are new combinations. A lectotype is designated for Aphaereta debilitata Morley, 1933. |

Objective: to describe the occasions when, the places where and people with whom respondents reported pork meat consumption. Design & Setting: Cross-sectional web based survey in Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Greece and Poland, January 2008, with quota samples on gender (male, female), age categories (20- 44y and 45-70y), and locality of residence (urban, rural with low pig production density and rural with high pig production density). Subjects: 2437 respondents (51% women, 49% men; mean age 41.4 y SD 13.1). Methods: Online computer based survey, including sociodemographic information, anthropometrics (weight, height), and further questions on frequency of pork consumption (30 common items, 17 country-specific items), the occasions (working day, any day,... |

Organic farming is finding increasingly widespread acceptance. The paper tries to examine whether the growth of organic farming is also connected with a transformation of economy and society under the heading of “ecological modernisation”. We use the example of Austria which is the EU-country with the highest percentage of organic farm area. The results of a survey undertaken in the frame of the EU-Project „Further Development of Organic Farming Policy in Europe, with Particular Emphasis on EU Enlargement“, EU-CEE-OFP are interpreted along the grid of ecological modernisation (GIBBS, 2000). The analysis suggests that the impact of organic farming was so far moderate and only towards a weak form. However there is a certain future potential in the... |

Over the last decade the development of Organic Action Plans (OAPs) has gained momentum as a mechanism for achieving a more integrated and balanced approach to organic policy-making in different European countries and at EU level. However the uptake, effectiveness and continuity of OAPs can vary significantly from country to country. For inst ance differing government priorities, the lack of ring-fenced public funding and the expectation that the organic sector should take the lead rather than government can impede the development of OAPs. This guide looks at the current status of OAPs in EU and EFTA countries with a special focus on plans at national and regional level and an in-depth analysis of six OAPs in the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany,... |

Organic farming is supported in Europe3 in different ways. Most countries have implemented specific area payments for organic farming through agri-environmental schemes to finance their contribution to environmental protection and the provision of other public goods. In the European Union these measures are typically financed through national or regional rural development programmes (RDPs) that are co-funded by the EU and Member State administrations. These payments are an important foundation for the financial performance of organic farms, since they compensate them for additional costs or income foregone due to their organic commitments. Besides payments, a wide range of other public policy instruments exist, such as financial support for processing and... |

This chapter is an update for some of the data presented in the article “Growth trends in European organic food and farming” (Willer et al. 2016) written by the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL), the Agriculture Market Information Company (AMI), and IFOAM EU, and published by IFOAM EU and FiBL in the volume “Organic in Europe, 2016”. Therefore, the structure of this chapter is different from the other regional statistics chapters in this book. The article focuses on Europe and on the 28 member states of the European Union (EU), and it shows some trends of the EU-13 and the EU-15 countries. The EU-13 countries are those that became members of the European Union in or after May 2004. The EU-15 countries are member countries of the European... |

In this chapter, the 2016 data on the organic sector in Europe and the European Union are summarized. The development of the European and the European Union’s organic sector in 2016 was characterized by two trends. On the one hand, the market showed a double-digit growth rate again (11.4 percent in Europe; 12 percent in the European Union). On the other hand, organic farmland growth continued to be slower than that of the market, but it was considerably faster than in the previous years, increasing by 6.7 percent in Europe and 8.2 percent in the European Union. The trend of the market growing at a faster rate than the area (Figure 68) has been occurring for several years, showing that production is still not keeping pace with consumer demand. |

On the one hand, the market showed a double-digit growth rate again (10.5 percent in Europe; 10.9 percent in the European Union). On the other hand, organic farmland growth continued to be slower than that of the market, but it was considerably faster than in the first years of the previous decade, increasing by 7.9 percent in Europe and 6.4 percent in the European Union. The trend of the market growing at a faster rate than the area has been occurring for several years, showing that production is still not keeping pace with consumer demand. However, the total... |

Organic agriculture continues to develop dynamically in Europe. In most countries the organic area is on the increase and the market continues to grow. This positive development is also due to several policy support measures; such as funding under rural development programmes, legal protection, action plans as well as support for research and advice The organic sector, represented by the EU Group of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM EU Group), plays an important role in the development of organic food and farming in Europe. |

BONNY, Sylvie. |
This article analyses the current position, the issues and prospects of organic farming in the world and particularly in Europe. A first section asserts the weakness of the current world organic market (less than 1% of the food market), but also its strong growth over recent years. In Europe the sales of organic produce, very variable according to countries, remain, on the whole, (very) modest per head though they are on the increase. Consumer motivations mostly connect with health, the environment, taste, animal welfare. A second section looks at the increase of organic farmland in the world, in Europe and in France, along with a rapid historical overview of its slow emergence over the 20th Century. Finally an analysis of what holds up the expansion of... |
